The difference between packed tower and plate tower:

The gas-liquid two phases in the packed tower are in continuous countercurrent contact, and mass and heat transfer are carried out between the two-phase components. As the two phases continue to rise and fall, the component concentration changes continuously.

There are multi-layer trays in the plate tower. There are many small holes on the trays. The gas and liquid phases flow in a serpentine shape layer by layer, forming a countercurrent, while the two phases are in contact with each other and conduct mass and heat transfer. The concentration changes stepwise as the trays flow to different heights.

Analysis of the advantages of the plate tower:

(1) In terms of capacity control, the plate tower has a larger operating range. Packed towers are particularly sensitive to changes in the flow of liquid materials. When the liquid flow is small, sufficient liquid distribution on the surface of the packing will not be obtained, and the mass transfer effect will be significantly reduced; when the liquid flow is too large, flooding is likely to occur.

(2) Packed towers cannot adapt to materials containing solid particles, while plate towers can appropriately increase the screen holes to effectively adapt to such materials.

(3) The cleaning of the plate tower is simpler and more convenient.

(4) When it is necessary to remove the heat of reaction or the heat of dissolution, the plate tower can be designed more flexibly to deal with it. Generally, it can be solved by installing a cooling coil on the tower plate, but the packed tower cannot adapt to this working condition.

Analysis of advantages of packed tower:

(1) The diameter of the packed tower can be designed and manufactured in a wide range, and the diameter of the plate tower is generally not less than 600mm due to manufacturing restrictions.

(2) The design of the plate tower is more accurate and reliable, and requires high manufacturing and installation, so the safety factor is small.

(3) When the diameter of the tower is small, the cost of the packed tower is cheaper.

(4) The packing material in the packing tower has a wide range of options, which has advantages for corrosive materials.

(5) Because the filler has the effect of restricting and breaking the foam, the packed tower is suitable for materials that are easy to foam.

(6) The amount of stagnant liquid in the packed tower is small, and the residence time of the material in the tower is short, which has inherent advantages for heat-sensitive materials.

(7) The pressure drop of the packed tower is small, which is more suitable for vacuum or low-pressure working conditions.
