The expansion joint plays a role in compensating for the thermal expansion mismatch caused by temperature differences between the shell and the tube bundle in the heat exchanger, ensuring the normal operation of the equipment.
Its working principle is based on thermodynamics and fluid mechanics. When two fluids with different temperatures flow through a heat exchanger, the shell and tube bundle will undergo different thermal expansions. The function of the expansion joint is to compensate for this thermal expansion mismatch, coordinate the displacement between the shell and the tube bundle, reduce thermal stress, and avoid equipment damage.
For example, the core components of a stainless steel tube condenser include baffles, shells, and expansion joints. The function of a baffle is to enhance fluid turbulence, thereby improving heat transfer efficiency and providing support for the tube bundle. The shell is cylindrical in shape, equipped with connecting pipes to facilitate fluid flow in and out, and equipped with anti-collision baffles to protect the tube bundle. The design of expansion joints aims to compensate for the stress difference between the tube bundle and the shell caused by temperature differences, in order to prevent equipment damage due to excessive temperature differences. Although expansion joints are a solution, other designs such as floating head can also be chosen, although these designs may be more expensive.
In practical production, waveform expansion joints are widely used due to their large compensation capacity, while Ω - shaped expansion joints have become another common choice due to their suitability for high-pressure environments. The single wave compensation capability of an expansion joint is influenced by its shape, size, and material properties. For example, when the wave height is low, its pressure resistance is stronger but its compensation capability is weaker; When the wave height is high and the wave distance is large, the compensation amount of the expansion joint increases, but its pressure resistance capacity will correspondingly decrease.
In addition, the thinner the wall of the expansion joint, the higher its flexibility, thus having greater compensation capability. However, in order to ensure the overall strength of the structure, the determination of wall thickness needs to be comprehensively considered, balancing the relationship between flexibility and strength.
Therefore, when designing expansion joints, it is necessary to comprehensively consider working conditions such as temperature, pressure, and medium, and choose an appropriate expansion joint form to ensure its reliability and avoid leakage and damage. At the same time, it should be ensured that the installation and maintenance of expansion joints are easy to reduce long-term operating costs. And consider its fatigue life during long-term operation to ensure the stability and durability of the heat exchanger.
